Living Waters Catholic Schools recognizes the value of computers, other electronic resources, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve student learning and enhance school operations. Living Waters also recognizes the importance of upholding all Catholic moral imperatives, ensuring all people are treated with dignity and respect. To this end, the Division encourages the ethical, legal, and responsible use of technology and AI in support of the Division's mission and goals.
Living Waters Catholic Schools Rights and Responsibilities
It is the policy of Living Waters to maintain an environment that promotes ethical and responsible conduct in all online activities. The Division recognizes its obligation to protect the well-being of students and retains the following rights:

To log network use, monitor file server space, and monitor real-time online activities to ensure compliance with laws and policies.

To remove any user account or email account on the network.

To provide internal and external controls, including the right to determine who has access to equipment and to restrict online destinations through filtering software.

To restrict or limit the use of specific emerging technologies, including AI tools, as determined by the Superintendent or designate.

To conduct a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) before implementing new platforms or AI tools that involve personal information.

To cooperate fully with local, provincial, or federal officials in investigations related to illegal activities conducted through the network.
Staff Responsibilities

Staff shall make reasonable efforts to monitor student use of equipment to ensure it conforms to the mission and goals of Living Waters.

Staff should model the thoughtful and ethical use of AI tools throughout the instructional cycle, including planning, instruction, and assessment.

Teachers shall clearly communicate expectations for AI use, including permitted and prohibited uses, and establish guidelines for reporting AI use in assignments.
User Responsibilities

Users agree to learn and comply with all provisions of this agreement to maintain their access privileges.

It is understood that using personal or Division-assigned technology in Living Waters buildings results in diminished privacy rights.

Students must act as good digital citizens, which includes respecting and protecting themselves, others, and intellectual property.

Students must report any message that is inappropriate or makes them feel uncomfortable to a teacher or trusted adult.
Acceptable Use

All use of the Internet and technology must support educational and research objectives.

AI may be utilized for generating ideas, practicing skills, or enhancing subject understanding under teacher guidance.

Students must be transparent about the use of any digital resources, including AI, in their learning.

Proper codes of conduct and etiquette must be used in all electronic communications.
Unacceptable Use

Academic Dishonesty: Submitting AI-generated work as your own without disclosure or using AI to complete assignments/exams intended to be completed without assistance.

Privacy Violations: Entering proprietary data or information that identifies a student (e.g., full name, Alberta Education ID) into AI tools that store or process data.

Malicious Content: Using technology to create deepfakes (artificial manipulation of a person's face/voice) to deceive others or convey false narratives.

Harassment: Sending hate mail, discriminatory remarks, or engaging in bullying, "socially antisocial" behaviors, or "gossip" about others.

Unauthorized Recording: Recording audio, video, or photos of staff or students without express permission is prohibited.

Bypassing Security: The use of proxy avoidance software to circumvent Division firewalls and filter systems is strictly prohibited.

Mobile Device Restrictions: Personal mobile devices must be stored out of view during school hours unless permitted by the principal for instructional or health purposes.

Illegal Activity: Downloading copyrighted materials without permission, unauthorized software installation, or participating in online gambling.
Definitions

Artificial Intelligence (AI): Computer systems capable of performing tasks requiring human intelligence, such as decision-making and visual perception.

Generative AI (GAI): AI tools that can produce new content like text, images, or audio based on patterns learned from data.

Network: Any method of electronic information access (wired, wireless, or cellular) within Division buildings or using Division hardware.

Living Waters is not responsible for information retrieved via the network or for loss of data resulting from service interruptions.

The Division is not responsible for the loss, theft, or damage of personal devices; responsibility remains with the owner.

Student records and files created in Google Workspace are stored on servers located outside of Canada and are subject to foreign laws.

Approved EdTech Tools (e.g., Canva, Kahoot, Blooket) have been reviewed for privacy, and specific parental consent is no longer required for Division-approved tools.
By acknowledging the Student Technology Acceptable Use Agreement, students are held accountable to the following:
